Mallos de Agüero, Spain
Today we travel to Agüero, a picturesque town with just under 130 inhabitants in the province of Huesca, Aragon, Spain. While it’s small, there’s something that makes this quintessential Spanish town worth featuring in today’s image – and that’s the rock formation, known as Mallos de Agüero, under which it is located. Sculpted by erosion and hundreds of metres high, the Mallos de Agüero are reddish dolomite structures that act as the natural boundary between the Pyrenean mountains and the Somontano.
Nature abounds in Agüero, with the waters of the Gállego river flowing nearby and the famed Mallos de Riglos located on the opposite side of the riverbank. The town is surrounded by mountains, so the buildings you find here are perched at an altitude of almost 700 metres. Nature lovers can take part in a wide variety of activities, such as climbing, hiking, rafting and canoeing. And when you’ve finished exploring the outdoors, there’s history and culture to discover, the highlight being the Collegiate Church of Bolea, which was declared a National Monument of Historic and Artistic Value in 1983, and the Castle of Loarre, which is the best-preserved Romanesque castle in Europe.
